Een emotioneel moment daar even...
The hotel breakfast was a surprise for me. Wasa crispbread, chocolate sprinkles, and even ERU cream cheese.
After breakfast, via Arnhem, we continued on to the Gelderse Achterhoek.
In Arnhem, we visited the Dutch Fire Service Academy, where I eventually graduated up to and including my MCDm (Master in Crisis and Disaster Management).
On June 29, 2010, I also presented the first copy of my book, "Speurtocht naar persoonlijk meesterschap" (In search for Personal Mastery), to the managers of the Academy for Leadership Safety Regions.
Roy Penders, Coordinator of Facility Management & Accommodation for the various NIPV locations, received us as guests of honor. I know him from way back.
The building has since been renamed NIPV (Netherlands Institute for Public Safety). In my view, this is an excellent development. After all, when you are in need, you want the most appropriate help at your doorstep at the fastest possible moment. This is a logical principle I held right from the start at the fire department. The fire department, police, medical emergency services, defense, water boards, municipalities, provinces, water and energy companies, and so on, are not individually the best! It is about the perfect way of collaborating where the outcome is much more than the sum of the individual parts. A network organization, therefore, in which specializations are deployed for the best result. After all, citizens collectively pay a considerable amount of tax for it.
Safety regions as network organizations are nothing short of logical, and the NIPV specifically teaches this network collaboration for a safe and resilient Netherlands. I am proud of that to this day!
And although that idea is now as logical as can be, that was far from the case at the time. The old mindset that you had to be the biggest and most important player—within the fire service, the police, healthcare, etc.—was deeply rooted. And individual players, who considered themselves more than important, put up a strong resistance.
In Zeeland, the region/province with the greatest regional and national risk after Rotterdam-Rijnmond, I was even forbidden as director from building a network organization by deliberate obstructionists. That phrase is literally recorded in the minutes of the meetings from that time.
It came as a shock, because that was exactly what I had been hired for, and the recruitment advertisement in the newspaper specifically targeted this: "A networker through and through, who establishes optimal cooperation between all individual organizations contributing to physical safety within our beautiful Zeeland province."
Mayors who actually saw the potential, were afraid of the key players who were opposed. It led to my burnout because it became like flogging a dead horse.
In hindsight, the good news—although I fought for well over a year and a half as a captain to get back on the ship of 1,350 super-motivated colleagues—was that I was able to build a new life in Thailand much sooner than I had wanted or expected at the time.180 Degrees different, after completing studies at the Buddhist university in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and through training in the Netherlands, as a certified meditation-, Kundalini yoga-, and Tantra teacher as well as Dutch/English certified life & talent coach.
A breath of fresh air.
I still recognized the Dutch Fire Service Academy building from the outside. Inside, a total transformation has taken place over the years. Roy showed us around.
We also visited the memorial field for firefighters who died in the line of duty. In their honor, and ours, the crossed fountains were turned on.
The National Fire Service Memorial takes place annually on the third Saturday of June. It is a custom/ritual observed by all fire departments throughout the Netherlands, featuring crossed low-pressure water jets in memory of colleagues who fell while performing their work.
An emotional moment there...
It took a bit of searching, but Phatsamon found me in the photo from the 21st basic training course for professional fire officers National Dutch Fire-Service Academy (RBA)(1982 - 1984).
She also gave a lecture in the auditorium about safety in Thailand (thanks to my daughter for using AI ;)).
As you can see in the photos below, the guests/students seemed very interested at first. But the Thai language didn't go down well, so they left Phatsamon 'empty-handed' and with empty chairs ;).
Roy treated us to a fantastic lunch at the NIPV restaurant. Thanks to Roy for his time and, once again, his great effort.

I thoroughly enjoyed working my first job as a fire officer after my training in Shaesbergen-Arnhem, in Doetinchem, for the Achterhoek Region (East Gelderland Cooperation). I also met my former-wife there.
Together with Phatsamon, I visited the houses where I had lived in Doetinchem and Gaanderen-Doetinchem. I got married from the house at the Klootsemastraat in Doetinchem on May 27, 1988. At the time, according to Achterhoek custom, it was fully decorated as you can see.
The Doetinchem fire station, next to the police station on Cornelis Missetstraat, was no longer there, and we could not find the new station. It was also getting late, and we wanted to go to the hotel we had booked in Zeddam.
On the way there, we passed a restaurant called "De Azië Keuken," (The Asian Kitchen) and that word alone awakened Phatsamon's "noodle addiction."
So, off we went to that restaurant that evening to eat.
In the Netherlands, we have the saying: "It costs a pretty penny, but you get what you pay for." That proved to be more than true at this place. I have gained a lot of experience in Chinese-Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands (including from the fire department using these kitchens when we had a long job to do), but this really surpasses everything!
Back to our hotel in Zeddam that evening after the more than excellent dinner.
Note:
It's a long story, but just this: Doetinchem and the Achterhoek region were a more than fantastic and happy start for me. I got to work with a small group of professional staff and about 500 professional volunteers. Doetinchem may have been my base, but you could find me everywhere at every fire-station in the region in the evenings.
What else could you do as a bachelor at that time? Every evening I would attend a training session at one of the active volunteer brigades. And in addition to being Deputy Regional Commander of the region, I started as a volunteer fire-fighter , so not at all an officer, in one of the four units of the Doetinchem fire brigade, under the leadership of Commander Eskes, who was still a volunteer at the time.
My regional boss had strong objections to it, and I just thought it was cool to gain practical experience with the fire department and experience camaraderie in my spare time as well. The firefighters in that entire region were one big family.
I also traveled with the international competition team from Doetinchem-fire brigade. Among other places, to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Together with the entire international team of the brigade, we organized these international skills tests in Doetinchem as well. And of course my parents, as my biggest fans, were there. Here are a few impressions.
My political boss was the mayor of Lichtenvoorde (Jacques Groffen). Really crazy and amuzing moments with him, especially as a super young acting regional commander, because my much older boss had to step down from his position due to the regional board, and we hadn't found a successor for a long time.
My fire brigade bosses were the regional commander at the time and the volunteer commander of Doetinchem. Actually, in hindsight, it shouldn't have been possible at all, and yet, it was more than comical and fantastic and... I was a family member of all the brigades.
