Magische levensreis (Deel 3) / Magic life journey (Part 3) Zandvoort & Amsterdam

Zondag 5 juli / Sunday July 5 2026

After the regular early morning walk, I introduced old Dutch games to my Thai wife. Phatsamon won at shuffleboard right on the first try.

After breakfast, we started the day with a tour of Zandvoort and Haarlem.
Phatsamon had trouble walking due to blisters on her feet. We decided to go by car to give her feet some rest before our day in Amsterdam on Monday. That worked out well, as the weather was cloudy.

We also visited the war cemetery in the dunes of Bloemendaal.

Strangely enough, the day before, we couldn't find our cousin Vincent's grave, at the same cemetery as my parents in Bloemendaal. After some searching online, his grave eventually appeared, and we felt we had to go back again. So we did.

In the evening, we were invited to dinner with very close friends, their children, and partners.

Maandag 6 juli / Monday July 6 2026

Not done in de Thaise cultuur.

A day of traditional 'tourist -visit' to Amsterdam.

We parked the Dollar / Hertz car-rental at the Spaarnwoude Park + Ride of Dutch Railway company and took the train a few stops to Amsterdam Central Station. Nice just to get the experience. Just like taking the so called tram (street train) in Amsterdam itself, by the way.

A canal cruise through the Amsterdam canals with the company 'Rederij Plas', just like my parents used to do with me back in the days (picture of my mom doing the canal cruise when I was a young boy.

Upon arrival at Amsterdam's Stationsplein, Phatsamon immediately received personal security from anAmsterdam police unit. That felt safe after all the terrible stories and panic you ongoing see on Youtube and more. It's all true but also causing you huge panic in advance to visit this wonderful capital of The Netherlands.

During the interesting cruise, which in my eyes is still exactly the same as I did with my mom before, the air raid siren (Dutch Warning and Alarm System) went off at exactly 12:00. It was the first Monday of the month. Regular testing.
The captain of our ship explained the alarm had a double meaning. Keep inhabitants aware of the passed second world war )never again ???) and, over all, stay in touch with the warning signal in case of a crisis, disaster or even war. Phatsamon was surprised by it.
By the way, nobody of the passengers jumped into the cannel because immediately I told them it was just and only testing and not a present of our Russian Poetin 'friend' arriving. These type of advises are still in my blood ;).

In the Kalverstraat, once again we met the active Dutch police force. Two officers were patrolling among the by tourist crowd. Suddenly, action... panic between people walking and shopping, less than five meters in front of us. A pickpocket and shoplifter ran away through the crowd. People screamed.

The officers sprang into action in a flash. It went like this...:

They looked like two leaden airplanes taking off that were 'slowly' getting off the airport. I think that was because they were both wearing some sort of heavy 'slimming belts'. We believe those must weigh at least 10 kilos. Unimaginable that you can still work and run with that. And yet... in no time at all, the guy was arrested.

I spoke with Phatsamon about how my parents used to have a family friend, Henk van Musherd, over. He was a police officer at the Haarlem-NL police. Every week, he helped my mother, as an actress at the Haarlem Theatre, memorize the lines for her roles. Sometimes he would cycle to our home from work in uniform. My parents taught me that you had to be extra respectful towards 'Uncle' Henk on those occasions. In my view, it couldn't be any other way. When he took off his uniform jacket, the buckle with the municipal police emblem gleamed on his belt. His 'weapon' was only his mouth. Communication.

Over the years, that belt has become a lot heavier. If you stop to think about it for a moment, just and only to be able to continue protecting us and of course themselves to keep them safe.

Actually proof of how our society, in a terrible way, has not developed further into a safer society, but has actually become much more dangerous.

Still, the blisters on Phatsamon's feet were bothering her more and more. It's no fun spending a day in Amsterdam with sore feet. So, we took the tram back towards Amsterdam's Red Light District. Way, way too early to really stay there and taste the real atmosphere, but there was no other option.

We tried to stall for time by having dinner together at a Thai restaurant (BIRD, at the Zeedijk 72-74). The only and WORST decision of our trip. The only low point. Phatsamon was ashamed too, and we informed the owner. She felt she had suffered 'loss of face'. Not done in Thai culture.
The restaurant staff, angry, also refused to look at us after the commend I made to help (constructive criticism to present 'our' country in a much better way). In our eyes (and we think we know what we are talking about) this restaurant is absolutely the VERY WORST ambassador/presentation of Thailand. The service and approach are totally Westernized, and you get absolutely no value for your money. Very sorry but not recommended, too bad.

After this sad experience, we moved on to what was open in De Wallen (Amsterdam Red-Light district). We visited several shops to see if there was anything to our liking. Unfortunately, no live shows, but luckily there was an occasional lady behind only some windows for Phatsamon to get an impression. But it wasn't dark and, in my opinion, therefore lacked the atmosphere like it always has there in the evening.

In a side street stood a young prostitute. A n in our eyes beautiful woman in an even more beautifully colored 'play outfit'. Together, she caught our attention. We walked on, looked at each other, and saw a 'whooow' in each other's eyes. And that meant turning around.
We knocked on the woman's door. She opened the door and we asked her where she got this super sexy outfit from. She thought it was really nice and very happy about sharing our thoughts about her outfit, she briefly explained to us how she worked there with a few friends and that one of the group made the clothes. A super fun conversation with the three of us that we all enjoyed. This is Amsterdam. Really cool!

Walking was really impossible for Phatsamon now, so we decided to have a drink outside at the Red Light District cafe. Next to us was an incredibly beautiful cat and Phatsamon was delighted.

Finally, we took the train back to our hotel.

Following the same canal tour I once did with my mom.

Exactly 12.00, being at this place on the Amsterdam canals,
we heard the testing of the national warning system

Magische levensreis (Deel 2) / Magic life journey (Part 2) Leiderdorp & Velserbroek

Zaterdag 4 juli / Saturday july 4, 2026:

People think we are crazy. We suffer massively from jet lag (we are 5 hours ahead of the Netherlands during European summer time, 6 hours during European winter time).

Our life in Thailand, both in Surin where we live and Mae Rim / Chiang Mai where we go on vacation a few times a year, is connected to nature and the seasons.

That means we are up at sunrise (between 5:30 and 6:00 in the morning) and blissfully head into the woods with the dogs. Actually, not a day goes by without being aware of the sunrise. Bedtime is usually somewhere between 9:00 and 10:00 PM. Only a couple of hours after sun set (that regularly takes about fifteen minutes).

And, actually, that pattern presented itself in the Netherlands as well. Up at half past five in the early morning and walking in the woods, this time only with our dogs in Surin in mind. Blackberries were already there and it made Phatsamon happy. Cows, horses, and llamas in the fields, geese in the small lake around our hotel.

Upon returning, the first guests of the hotel, having a first coffee of the day, were without any hurry already sitting outside on the terrace waiting for breakfast to be served. They weren't quite panting from 'the heat' yet; it was code red in the Netherlands.
A laugh to see us dying of the, in our opinion, winter temperatures. We wore three sweaters/t-shirts layered on top of each other, with two coats over them just to stay a little warm.

After a fantastic breakfast at our hotel, off to Peter and Carla in Leiderdorp. Carla is the daughter of my mother's sister (Aunt Nel), and Peter, my cousin by marriage, is her husband, who until recently was a voluntary maintenance specialist for the Rijnlandse Molenstichting (Rijnlandse windmill foundation). When Phatsamon and I had just started our relationship, around nine years ago, they were the first Dutch friends/family members that visited us. That time they came by bike during their vacation in Chiang Mai.

Peter had arranged a personal VIP-visit with an explanation to the Meerburgermolen for Phatsamon/us. The Meerburgermolen is only one of many still-active Dutch mills based in Leiderdorp, dating back to 1684 (Buddhist calendar 2227).

When we arrived, as a tribute to us as 'high-ranking' Thai visitors, not only this mill was in progress, but also five other mills surrounding it. It made very happy.

And believe me, that feels quite different from being 'just another tourist' visiting the tulip fields in Hillegom-NL, for example.

Phatsamon, now with her over six years of building experience from our construction process, was hugely interested in the construction details.
And yes, that meant... working/helping to shut down the turning mill blades by her too. Showing off some (small ;)) muscular power she achieved at home.

Actually quite difficult with a height of 159 cm and a weight of 52 kilos. In Thai boxing, so called Muay Thai, she would fall into the Super Lightweight category. So, a blow from the windmill blade brings her, unintentionally, right back to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to leave the country. Happy Schengen forced us to take an insurance to deal with this as well... (30.000 Euro to transport my wife's dead body (WTF) as soon as possible back to Thailand) in such a situation. Both me for sure, as the insurance company (I only think) are happy she is still, in Thailand, alive.

'Working' (without official Dutch immigration work permit ;)), she received personal assistence from the miller in carrying out her 'commended duties' to stop the windmill blades turning.

Afterwards, we went to a more than fantastic restaurant, "De Polderfabriek" connected to a river sailed by tourist boats. And of course, we had brought some small gifts, but Carla and Peter were prepared for that.

They also brought some gifts for us. Three so called 'Forget-me-not' flowers cast in glass and... a small 80 years old painting.

That little painting had hung in the house of my Uncle Gerard and Aunt Nel (known in our own family for her expression of surprise: "Big straw sack") at Lindelaan 14, opposite the butcher's shop at the time, in Leiderdorp, for their entire lives. The place where I regularly stayed for a week during my school holidays. I remembered that special little painting, painted on plywood. Goosebumps. This small painting absorbed the family's energy at Lindelaan 14 in Leiderdorp, as well as the energy from my stay during school holidays. Remembrances and messages came back.

In the afternoon, we visited / ambushed, as Frank and Jolanda, my sister-in-law in Velserbroek. We had prepared for this already months ago by asking if she knew of a good Asian restaurant nearby, for acquaintances of ours (Frank and Jolanda). Afterwards, this was supplemented with the same story about dropping off a gift on our behalf that early Sunday evening.

After I rang her doorbell she looked at me, having unkempt grey hair, with deeply questioning eyes. And sure enough, after a decade of haircutting, she discovered this was her brother-in-law with his Thai wife.
A warm welcome, stories exchanged, and a customized dinner at that Asian restaurant.

She gave me the book that my brother Fons had published just before he passed away ("If it’s not about people, then it’s about absolutely nothing"), as well as the book "Nightmare in the ICU" writen by their daughter/my cousin, Irene.

The energy of these two books carried away with me that night.

After this visit and a good asian meal (I discovered my wife really time to time needs noodles), we went back to our hotel in Spaarnwoude.
